At the Kyoto International Manga Museum, special events and displays related to manga are held as the occasion demands. The museum aspect of the Kyoto International Manga Museum is the main thing that separates it from an ordinary manga coffee shop.
The regular displays include a display of illustrations of 100 Maiko (apprentice geishas) drawn by manga authors, and displays featuring the special characteristics of manga expression and history. There are also special displays held several times every year. On weekends, there is a Portrait Corner (fee required) and a Manga Workshop held by professional manga authors who have graduated from Kyoto Seika University where you can see manga being produced as you watch. There is also a Yassan’s Picture Story Show, conducted two or three times a day, where you can see nostalgic stories such as the "The Golden Bat," and some modern stories as well. Without a doubt, these stories will make you want to cry and laugh!
Furthermore, there’s more to do than just watch: there are also workshops you can participate in (although some require a fee). The content of these workshops depends on the special displays being held, so you can draw manga connected with the content of the special display. The workshop instructors will politely help you learn how to draw manga during the lesson, so even a beginner can take part in the workshop. Along with the manga reading and displays, this workshop function is one of the main attractions of the Kyoto International Manga Museum. |
