The Kyoto International Manga Museum, the Perfect Destination in Autumu
About 11 min. from ROHM by car
Once the wind at night feels a little cooler, you know that autumn has arrived. In Japanese, there is a phrase - "… no aki," meaning "… in autumn," where "…" can be any one of a multitude of words. In autumn, you often find you have regained some of the energy you lost in the hot summer months, and you feel like you are ready for a new challenge. While autumn makes some people think of "sport," or "having a good appetite," the phrase that comes to mind first for many Japanese is "Dokusho no aki," or "reading in autumn." Even reading one book can put you in the mood for travel, or make you feel like you have returned to your youthful ways, for books provide an entertaining world that allows an escape from reality.
The Kyoto International Manga Museum is one place you can immerse yourself in that world of fantasy. Sponsored by Kyoto City and Kyoto Seika University, the first university in Japan to treat manga as a field of study, the museum was opened in 2006 in the building that was formerly the Tatsuike Elementary School. At present the Kyoto International Manga Museum, popular with men and women of all ages, is a sanctuary for manga covering a whole range of genre, classic and modern, regardless of category.
However, the Manga Museum offers much more than the chance to read manga. The facility functions not only as a library, but also as a museum, providing the opportunity to publicize research results as well as serving as a source of priceless reference materials on the subject for those engaged in manga research. Manga is an aspect of culture that Japan can take pride in today It is also an art form that is not subject to or limited by stereotypes or existing concepts. The manga culture has been widely recognized overseas, where the art is highly valued, and many foreigners visit the museum every year. This autumn, why not take the opportunity to visit the museum in the reading season and make your autumn an artistic adventure?
