Daiyokujyo
A refreshing public bathhouse to wash away the weariness of travel
The area around Kyoto Station has many stores selling souvenirs and miscellaneous goods, many restaurants, and a number of temples and shrines. However, for people arriving in the area by overnight bus, there are surprisingly few places open in the early hours of the morning when looking for a place to rest. Many such travelers use the Daiyokujyo (large public bathhouse) located in the Kyoto Tower, on the 3rd floor underground. Daiyokujyo is open from 7:00 AM to 8:30 PM, so you can use the facility even early in the morning, or take a quick bath before starting out on your return trip.
You can use the Daiyokujyo public bathhouse facilities, including a small towel, soap, shampoo and rinse, for 750 yen, and rent a bath towel for 100 yen, so there is no need to bring anything with you. There is a large bath in the center of the facility, as well as a cold bath, a sauna, and showers.
The bath uses water from the public water system and there is always a plentiful supply of hot water, creating a rather luxurious atmosphere. However, the bath still retains a close resemblance to the public bathhouses of old, with wall tiles around the floors and walls, and old-style bath‐tubs and faucets, so the facility is really quite relaxing. If you want to settle back and relax in a bath, or sweat it out in a sauna, and refresh yourself after a tiring trip, the Tower Daiyokujyo public bathhouse is a most appropriate spot.
