Umekoji Park-Ichimoku Tezukuri-ichi (handicraft market)
Enjoying handicraft items and culture
The Tezukuri-ichi (literally, handicraft market) is held at Chionji Temple, the temple known as the "Temple of 1 million chants."
This custom started about 20 years ago, and recently, the market has become as just as popular as the Monmae Markets (temple gate markets) held from ancient times, such as the Tenjin-ichi Market held at the Kitano Tenmangu Shrine and the Kubo-ichi Market held at Toji Temple. The Ippon Tezukuri-ichi market, which is held at the event plaza near the Nanajo St. entrance to Umekoji Park, was started in 2006 as a sister market, due to the increasingly huge number of shops entered by folk who had stalls at the Tezukuri-ichi Chionji Temple market.
There are about 300 stalls at the market, selling handicrafts such as handcrafted glass and pottery and even food, such as bread and cakes. Some people have even taken advantage of the popularity of their stalls at this market and opened real, full-time stores. Here you can find good quality products at low prices, and develop good relationships with the stallholders, one of the most enjoyable parts of the market. While listening to the story behind each stall's products, you can try bargaining for a special price, or search for something really unique.
