Steam locomotives
A black steam locomotive running on the tracks just as it did in years past
Steam locomotives were active from the Meiji Period through part of the Showa Period, carrying both passengers and freight all over the country. Now, when you can only normally see them in black and white photographs, many fans visit the Umekoji Steam Locomotive Museum to see the real thing.
As their name implies, steam locomotives used steam as their motive force and the English "steam locomotive" was abridged to "SL," as they are commonly known in Japan.
There are 19 steam locomotives of 17 types preserved at the Umekoji Steam Locomotive Museum and of these, 7 are in good enough condition to run on the tracks even today. On occasion, two of these steam locomotives are still put into use on separate lines, the SL "Yamaguchi," a C57 Type, as Engine No. 1 on the Yamaguchi line and the SL "Kita Biwako," a C56 Type, as Engine No. 160 on the Hokuriku Line.
In addition to taking a close look at these steam locomotives, you can actually go for a ride on one! The "SL Steam" is capable of operation and pulls a trolley-like passenger car on a 1 km display operation track located on the south side of the museum grounds. At times, you can see the "SL Steam" running at the same time as the electric cars on the JR Kyoto Line and the Shinkansen Line. Taking this 10-minute ride on an SL is another way to enjoy the Umekoji Steam Locomotive Museum.
