The Heian nobles came to this immaculate and silent district on pleasure trips.
It is said that the powerful Hata family first developed the Sagano area during the Heian Period. The landscape in particular is known as a place of great beauty and it became the destination for the Emperor and nobles on hunting and pleasure trips. In the Genji Monogatari (The Tale of Genji) there is a section called the Sakaki no Maki (Evergreen Volume), in which the Nonomiya Shrine and the surrounding area, including the Sagano Bamboo Grove, are mentioned. Throughout the seasons, travelers come here to be wrapped in this quiet and immaculate atmosphere.
