Goten Complex (former Omuro Gosho)
The main hall at Ninnaji Temple, almost identical in style to a Heian period palace.
The Goten Complex, the main residence halls of the monks at Ninnaji Temple, is located just past the Niomon Gate on the west side of the approach road. The founder of Ninnaji Temple, Emperor Uda, built a residence here, called Omuro, to live in after he left the imperial household, and because it resembles the imperial household at Gosho, it came to be known as the "Omuro Gosho." One of the Goten Complex structures, the Shinden, was moved to the temple grounds from the Kyoto Gosho after the temple was reconstructed in the Edo Period, but it was burned down in 1887. The present structure is thought to have been constructed in 1913. On the south side, the Shinden building is overlooked by the Sakon-no-Sakura Cherry on the right and the Ukon-no-Tachibana Wild Orange Tree on the left, in the Nantei Garden. To the north, there is the Hokutei Garden, a famous scenic spot in Kyoto, constructed in the Chisenshiki Style, which employs water as one of its natural elements. Together, the Shinden and the gardens create an atmosphere that evokes visions of the ancient imperial palaces, and they have been designated as national historic sites, known formally as the "Ninnaji Gosho-ato" (Ninnaji Temple Gosho Remains).
