My most powerful memory is of Thomas Jöbstl (currently of the Vienna Philharmonic) who had already mastered the Vienna horn at the age of eighteen. I was shocked by the level of skill he had attained and was inspired to deepen my insight in music. Meeting young musicians of the same age in the ancient city of Kyoto, a place redolent with Japan’s history, allows them to look at themselves afresh and it is without a doubt, a truly unique festival.

To this day, I am very grateful that right at the beginning of my studies at University of Arts Berlin, I was recommended for participation at the Kyoto International Music Students Festival.
The Festival’s concept and its kind, knowledgable, and helpful staff were instrumental in turning my very first trip to Japan into a most memorable, beautiful, and inspiring one. I fondly remember a well thought-through balance of fruitful musical activities as well as impressive sight-seeing tours around some historic sites of Kyoto during our leisure time, giving all participants valuable first insights into Japanese culture. I consider it a unique experience I was fortunate enough to share with fellow music students from major international music schools. Over the years, I have loosely kept in touch with a few other participants, and we always fondly remembered the Festival.
After finishing my studies in Berlin and later in New York, I have been fortunate to sustain a career as a concert violinist. Giving back musically has become more and more of a personal desire, so besides bringing music to elementary schools or homes for the elderly, I have been a professor of violin at the Mannheim University of Music and Arts. I also co-founded and am Artistic Director of the chamber music festival “Krzyzowa Music”.

Munich-born violinist Viviane Hagner has won exceptional praise for her highly intelligent musicality and passionate artistry. Since making her international debut at the age of 12, and a year later participating in the legendary ‘joint concert’ of the Israel and Berlin Philharmonics (conducted by Zubin Mehta in Tel Aviv), Hagner has acquired a depth and maturity in her playing that delights her audiences.
Appearing with the world’s great orchestras, her concerto appearances include the Berlin Philharmonic, Boston Symphony and Leipzig Gewandhaus, working with conductors such as Ashkenazy, Barenboim, Eschenbach and Salonen. She also appeared at the Carnegie Hall with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.
Following several recent visits to North America, last season she was in residence in Vancouver performing Unsuk Chin’s Violin as well as chamber music and masterclasses. Highlights elsewhere included a tour of Italy with the Camerata Salzburg and recording solo Bach in an empty Berlin Konzerthaus to be streamed online.
Hagner is an ardent advocate of new, neglected and undiscovered music, championing composers such as Sofia Gubaidulina and Witold Lutoslawski. Dedicatee of Unsuk Chin’s Violin Concerto, she performed the world premiere in 2002 with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester and Kent Nagano and around the world.
A committed chamber musician, Hagner regularly appears in concert halls such as the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Berlin Konzerthaus, London’s Wigmore Hall and the Zurich Tonhalle, etc., as well as performing at festivals across the world, including the Salzburg Easter Festival.
On disc, the Hyperion label issued Hagner’s performances of Vieuxtemps Violin Concerti 4 & 5, whilst Analekta released her recording of Unsuk Chin’s Violin Concerto with Kent Nagano and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra.
Hagner dedicates herself to outreach activities for audiences of all ages. She is a founder and Artistic Director of Krzyżowa-Music, an ambitious festival promoting the exchange of ideas and culture whilst allowing young and aspiring musicians the opportunity to rehearse and perform with internationally acclaimed artists. She has been Professor at the Mannheim Conservatory of Music and Performing Arts since 2013.

My name is Stephan Koncz, I am cellist with the Berlin Philharmonic and was a participant of the Kyoto Music Students Festival in 2004.
It was my first time in Japan back then and immediately after arriving at the airport the differences in culture were a positive shock; everything and everybody was so polite, perfectly organized and filled with meaning! Absolutely fascinating!
The festival’s idea of bringing together musicians from all over the world was most exciting since making music together not only shows differences in musical upbringing but on the contrary fills us all with joy of having a common language: music!
Soon after I became a scholarship holder of the Berlin Philharmonic Karajan Academy and joined the Vienna Philharmonic in 2008. 2010 I switched to the cello section of the Berlin Philharmonic and I am a very happy member since.
I want to send a message to all our younger colleagues out there who are no doubt experiencing a hard time during this Corona crisis: keep working and focusing as hard as ever on your passion that is music! There soon will be a time when you can share musical experiences with colleagues and a hungry audience again!

My name is Marcus Merkel, I am a conductor from Berlin/Germany and I was representing the “UdK Berlin” in the Kyoto International Music Students Festival 2012.
My visit to Japan in 2012 was a really special experience. I feel honored to have been allowed to spend a wonderful time among colleagues, musicians from other countries, and our marvelous hosts. The perfect organization of the whole process, as well as the high level of preparation of everyone were impressive. I realized that although we all came from very different backgrounds, there was the unique voice of music uniting us all. The beauty of Kyoto and the warmth of the welcome I received might never be matched.
While still studying, I started working at the opera in Graz/Austria as a pianist and soon as a conductor. Today I‘m “Kapellmeister” at the Oper Graz and I‘m conducting ~40 performances per year, and several more in engagements all over Europe.
Covid-19 has put most of the European theaters on hold, but for now I am grateful to be able to live a life in music. I think that musicians will come back with an even greater energy and motivation after this.
