CMOS LDO Regulator with World's Smallest Package for Automotive UseUltra-compact Automotive LDOs Feature Low Power Consumption, High Performance and Reliability

2017.11.24

The BUxxJA2MNVX-C series are LDO regulators that provide AEC-Q100 support in a 1-mm square molded package. These products reduce the footprint by 55% compared with the 1.5-mm square molded packages that had been regarded as the smallest possible automotive components. These world’s-smallest* automotive LDO regulators were developed for use in automotive modules where reliability and miniaturization are sought, such as ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) sensors and cameras, radars, and the like. *ROHM survey, as of April 15, 2016

Complement of Basic Functions and Specifications for Automotive Use

The features and a block diagram of the BUxxJA2MNVX-C series are shown below. The IC chips are manufactured to be as small as possible for use in ultra-compact 1-mm square packages, but they are provided with the basic functions of recent LDO regulators, such as an output discharge circuit that forcibly discharges the output capacitor during shutdown to quickly bring the output to 0 V, overcurrent protection and thermal shutdown circuits, and support for compact ceramic capacitors. Current consumption is also an extremely low 35 μA (Typ).

Of course the device specifications are for automotive use, including support for AEC-Q100, operating temperature of up to 125°C, and the like.

Low Current Consumption Combined with Desirable Load Response Characteristic

When reducing the size of an IC chip as much as possible, high resistances that increase the circuit scale cannot be used, and so there is the possibility that the current consumed by the circuit may increase. Given this constraint, it is necessary to strike a balance between low current consumption and a satisfactory load response characteristic (the fluctuation in output voltage with changes in the load).

The BUxxJA2MNVX-C series shrinks the chip size through a reference voltage circuit that uses a depression-type MOSFET, through an amplification circuit using unique circuit technology, and by other means, to simultaneously achieve a satisfactory load response characteristic and low current consumption of 35 μA, about half that of conventional devices.

The following graph shows the current consumption and output voltage fluctuation characteristics versus the output current (load current). The “new product” curves are for the BUxxJA2MNVX-C series; the characteristics are clearly superior to those of conventional products.

The BUxxJA2MNVX-C series of LDO regulators achieve the compact size, low power consumption, high performance, and high reliability required of the latest power supply ICs for automotive applications.
