The G, H, and I series of new LDO linear regulators encompass a total of 91 products. In terms of output voltages, the adjustable type covers 0.8 V to 13 V, and the fixed type 1 V to 12 V, for a total of 14 different voltages, with a high output accuracy of 1%. In output current, these products provide four levels, from 0.3 A to 1.5 A, in a matrix of different current levels.
There is a concept of standard parts. Although the concept is referred to in different names, it means components that are tested for certification for adoption in an equipmnet design process, where components that have satisfied various required specifications in terms of quality and reliability, can subsequently be used by anyone without the trouble of going through the certification process again. The use of standard parts allows designers to select a given component with confidence and can shorten the Time-to-Product.
In addition, from the standpoint of purchasing and procurement, if the same set of components for different projects is selected, the resulting increase in the volume of purchase provides benefits in price negotiations and can reduce the amount of order management labor that would be required.
That being the case, does it follow that everything under the sun can be made with standard parts? The answer is “No”. If everything was made with standard parts, probably the benefits mentioned above could not be attained. First of all, the certification process is not only labor-intensive, but it involves considerable costs. Also, there may not be any advantage from a procurement standpoint unless a given component is good enough for application in many different design projects.
In other words, to merit the designation of a standard parts, that part must provide both general applicability and flexibility. In that sense, power supply ICs hold potential advantages as standard parts. A vast majority of electronic circuits requires power supply units. Furthermore, the LDO linear regulator is well-suited to a wide variety of applications. Linear regulator ICs have a wide variety of applications. If a linear regulator is well-suited to a wide variety of applications, however, it must have capabilities and meet specifications for a wide variety of applications and should be offered in an extensive set of product line-up.
The G, H, and I series of new LDO linear regulators described in this article is composed of an extensive set of as many as 91 products. With so many product offerings, you need to deal with only one company to fulfill all your needs, which would make it worthwhile to register the products as standard parts. You might think, however, that “getting 91 products certified could be a daunting task”. Be that as it may, there are several approaches to addressing the issue, an example being to bundle products in a series certification process if they share the same basic design.
It goes without saying that these products are not only numerous in models, but they are endowed with specifications and protective circuits that satisfy the latest performance requirements. The table below shows a list of performance characteristics and product offerings that the series provides.
