Umekoji Park
An oasis of greenery near Kyoto Station
Many people come to the Umekoji Park, which is spread out around the Umekoji Steam Locomotive Museum. Whether it is to take a rest on one of the benches or go for a run on the grass, everyone has their own way of enjoying the park. Originally, Umekoji Park was constructed as the site of a Greenery Fair held in 1995, and now with its overflowing greenery, it is a favorite oasis of people living in the area.
The park grounds cover an area of 11.7 hectares, and the facility, which includes a Grass Plaza, the Fureai Contact Plaza, and the Kawara Riverside Playground, is very popular as a recreation spot. The groundwater of the park grounds is kept in circulation by pumps, and runs as a river through the park along the Kawara Riverside Playground. This playground is shaded by the trees nearby, so it is a great spot to visit in the hot summer months. In the center of the park, there is the Suzaku-no-niwa Garden, constructed in the Japanese Ikeizumi Kaiyushiki Garden style, and the Inochi-no-mori Life Forest, a biotope environment full of natural wildlife, like birds and butterflies.
During the period from 1895 through 1978, the Chin-Chin Electric Railway ran through the streets of Kyoto. Now one of these popular railway cars is preserved in Umekoji Park and it is a favorite attraction in a variety of events held in the park over the course of the year.
Decorated by the various blooming seasonal flowers, Umekoji Park is a restful oasis in the midst of the urban landscape. When you come to visit the Umekoji Steam Locomotive Museum, don’t miss the opportunity to visit this cool and shady park as well.
