The Kondo Hall in front of the Nandaimon Gate shows the majesty of the Heiankyo Capital
In 1895, as part of the memorial works commemorating the transfer of the capital to Heiankyo in Kyoto, the west gate of Sanjusangendo Temple was transferred to Toji Temple where it became the Nandaimon Gate, and now it is designated as an important cultural property. After going through the gate you will find each of the main structures, the Kondo Hall, the Kodo Hall, the Jikido Hall, and the Kitadaimon Gate, set out in a straight line. The Kondo Hall is the main building at the temple, and it is dedicated to Yakushinyorai, believed to protect people from all types of illness, and the Bodhisattvas (Buddhist saints) Nikko and Gakko. The Kondo Hall is also designated as a national treasure. When Toji Temple was constructed, the work started with the construction of the Kondo Hall. After that, the hall stood as an imposing structure functioning as the gateway to Kyoto for more than 600 years. However, the temple was destroyed by fire in 1486, and the present Kondo Hall was reconstructed by Toyotomi Hideyori to the same scale and in the same location as it was originally built. Accordingly, it is a good example of Momoyama Period construction, with its characteristic style of roof with the center part raised higher than the rest of the roof tiles.
