The two major gates to Heian Jingu Shrine are painted bright red

Stretching from Sanjo Street to the north, Jingu Street functions as the approach road to Heian Jingu Shrine. This street intersects the Lake Biwa Canal: crossing the Keiryu Bridge, you come face to face with the vermillion Otorii, gateway to the shrine. This torii is one of the largest in Japan, standing 24.2 meters tall, and it leads directly to the Oten-mon Gate, the front gate of the shrine. Constructed as a replica of the Oten-mon Gate at Chodoin Temple in the Heian-kyo Capital, the Oten-mon Gate is a two-storied Ro-mon Gate, painted bright vermillion. The structure has been designated an important cultural property by Kyoto City.
