Dendengu Shrine is one of the tutelary shrines located on the grounds of the Horinji Temple complex. As the shrine is dedicated to the god of thunder and lightning (also electricity and radio waves), believers believe they will be blessed with safety and increased development in the electronics industry field. As such, this shrine has become a popular spot for visitors from power generation companies and others in the electronic industries. It is said that in the Nara Period on the day the monk Dosho completed preaching the teachings of Kokuzo Bodhisattva, a bright morning star fell from the sky and revealed Kokuzo Bodhisattva. The shrine was constructed as a tutelary shrine and dedicated to the god of thunder and lightning who revealed that morning star, Dendenmyojin. The shrine was popular with the local residents from ancient times but it was destroyed in a fire during the Hamaguri Gomon Incident in 1864. In 1956, expecting a great amount of development in the field of electronics, Hirabayashi Kinnosuke, the director of the Kinki Bureau of Telecommunications, rebuilt the shrine and rededicated it to Dendenmyojin the god of electricity and radio waves (the shrine was renamed to Dendengu in 1966). A pagoda was erected on the grounds of Horinji Temple to honor the spirits of those in the electronics and radio industries and there are copper statues of Edison and Hertz, as representatives in the electronics and radio research fields at the pagoda.
