Along with the thrill of going down the river, you can also enjoy the ever-changing seasonal landscape of the Hodzu Gorge.
From the Shinhodzu Bridge in Kameoka to the Togetsu Bridge in Arashiyama, the mountain torrent of the Hodzu River runs about 16 km, and it takes about two hours to ride down on a tourist boat. These excursion boats have a history dating back about 400 years to the days when boats were used to transport lumber from the Tanba area to Kyoto. The present style of excursion boat was first constructed in the Meiji period for tourism. The cherry blossoms in spring, the colorful leaves of autumn, and the cries of the flocks of birds on the wing in the Hodzu Gorge during all of the seasons are well worth the trip.
